What types of classes will my child be in at camp?
At Perkins Center Summer Arts Camp, your child will be involved in both visual arts and performance arts classes. Some examples from previous years at Moorestown are: pottery, papermaking, storytelling, theatre and improvisation, painting, African dancing, Salsa dancing, drumming and more. Typical Collingswood classes have been instrument making, performance design and production, painting and sculpture.
What types of projects will the children make and what will they learn?
Every summer our camp is based on a theme and this year our theme is "Carnival". Each teaching-artist approaches the theme in a unique way and the projects and lessons vary from session to session. A few examples of previous projects and lessons based on last year's Dreams and Wishes theme are:
- At Moorestown: Clay Velveteen "Wish" Rabbits, Painted Postcards based on a "Dream" vacation, Native-American Dream-Catchers, Singing Performances, Dancing and Theatre Performances.
- At Collingswood: a play based on the Hopes and Dreams of the Youth, Joseph Cornell inspired "Wish" boxes, Large Collaborative Paintings, and Percussion Performance with Rainsticks made by the campers.
All projects and lessons are age appropriate. The campers learn so much: The arts hone problem-solving skills, foster confidence, improve communication skills and cultivate creativity. The teaching-artists are very excited about this year's theme of Carnival, and they have many treats in store for the campers!
Please see our Camp Photo Gallery for a glimpse into projects and performances from last summer.
Will I be able to see my child perform or have the opportunity to view my child's work?
Yes! We have a Final Performance, Exhibition, and BBQ on the last day of each camp session and all family and friends are invited! This fun family event starts at 11:30am and wraps up at 12:45am.
Can my child attend multiple sessions?
Yes! Your son or daughter can sign up for as many sessions as you wish. Each session is varied. Even if your son or daughter has the same teaching-artist, that artist will work on a different project or vary the lesson.
How does the Moorestown Camp differ from the Collingswood Camp?
The Moorestown Camp is for 6-10 yr olds and is broken into 4 groups based on age: Orange and Red for 6-8 yr olds and Blue and Green for 9-10 yr olds. Moorestown campers see 6 different teaching-artists over the course of 2 weeks. The Collingswood Camp is for 11-14 yr olds and is broken into 2 groups. Collingswood campers see 2 teaching-artists over the course of the session for a more in-depth experience.
Please see the class schedules via the top navigation for a more detailed breakdown.
How many children will be in a group?
There are 16 children (max) per group with one counselor and one counselor-in-training (CIT) as well as the teaching-artist.
Do the children have a break?
Yes! In between classes from 10:30am - 10:50am campers will have a snack and recess/relaxation break. At Moorestown, if the weather is nice, the campers usually play soccer, jump rope, play tag or just relax on the huge lawn at Perkins. Drinks, fruit and a snack like animal crackers are provided. At Collingswood, the campers have snacks, sit outside, or just chill out and talk during their "relaxation" break!
Can my child be in the same group as his/her friend?
Yes, please make that clear upon registering and we can usually accommodate this request.
Is the facility air-conditioned?
At Moorestown, the facility has air conditioning units in each room and pitchers of water with paper cups in each classroom. At Collingswood, the classroom is air-conditioned and the large gallery room on the first floor usually remains cool with the help of fans. There is plenty of water and juice everyday for the campers.
My child has special needs, can he/she attend the camp?
Please call Kimberly Bunting, Director of Community Programs at 856-235-6488, ext. 316 to discuss your child's specific needs.
