Hands are drumming, feet are tapping, voices are calling out and paint is splashing as Perkins Center for the Arts ARTS Residencies come to completion for the current school year.
“I loved performing. What I loved the most was writing the songs…
Now I’ve experienced what you have to do to establish your presence and what you have to do to be a storyteller.”

Teaching artists in the ARTS program reached more than 0,000 students and community members in Burlington and Camden County public, parochial and independent schools in the 2009-10 school year. Residencies were presented in mural design and installation, theater, storytelling, poetry, percussion, contemporary dance, papermaking and sculpture.
Our residencies deepen the arts experience for students, enriching the school curriculum. Students work individually to learn and practice the art medium, then work collaboratively to implement the learning while producing the final work of visual, performance or written art.
“Students have been very cooperative with each other. It’s interesting to see how the creative process is uniting us…it’s an over-the-top WOW! The whole school loves the mural – what a labor of love.”
Pam Cahill
High School Art Teacher
Students learn more about their particular strengths and develop a deeper sense of community because of the need for understanding, teamwork and communication that the ARTS Residency process asks of them. Residencies offer intensive arts experiences and frequently bring surprises at the end, when the students have a chance to assess their own newly acquired skills.
“(At the beginning) I was a little off and nervous and shy. So I said to myself “I can do this, I know I can do it”. Then I was so happy with the way I was singing and so happy that I could perform in front of the whole school.”

The ARTS program also provides Professional Development In-Services for arts teachers. This year we developed and presented In-Services for visual art teachers in Southampton, Medford Lakes and Tabernacle School Districts and for the visual art and music teachers in the Medford District. Teachers worked side by side with professional artists learning new tools and techniques in their disciplines. They also received lesson plans based on the new NJ Core Curriculum Content Curriculum Standards and included proficiencies from the 21st Century Skills Framework.
