Fall Class Registration Begins on Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Perkins Center is privileged to offer an incredible faculty of teaching artists who lead classes for all levels and interests from ages 3 - 103!
Our decisions to run or cancel classes are based on the level of enrollment at different times during the registration period. It's essential for students to register as early as possible not only to ensure that a space will be available in the class but also to ensure that the class will run.
Perkins Center's Dance Program is a great way to introduce your child to dance and creative movement without the expense of a formal dance studio.
New this year, all classes are 1 hour in length. There will be no class on November 27, 28 and December 21 – January 3.
The following dress code is recommended:
- Every class: Pink ballet slippers and pink ballet tights
- 5 – 6 years old: Pink leotards
- 6 – 7 years old: Light blue leotards
- 8 – 12 years old: Black leotards

Pre-Ballet I
Designed to improve motor skills and agility, this class will develop confidence in your young dancer. Students will learn discipline as they work in a group setting. Children also will develop their sense of rhythm, balance and coordination.

Parent and Child Handbuilding
Calling all Parents! Take two hours each week to bond with your child in an exciting and creative class that will introduce children (and possibly you) to the exciting medium of clay. Welcome to Pottery

Exploring Clay

Fantastic Sculpture Explorations
Through paint sculpture & assemblage, children will experience tactile discovery through the use of found and recycled objects to create amazing sculptures.
In this class, students will enjoy building and creating sculptures, mobiles and puppets of imaginary creatures, animals and structures from dinosaurs and creatures to fun fantasy architectural structures. They will be introduced to contemporary sculptors and painters such as Jackson Pollack, Red Grooms, Joan Miro, and many more. Young artists will be encouraged to use their imagination freely in creating paintings and sculptures with gentle instruction in materials and techniques.

From Tales to Art

Play in Clay
Come and enter a fun world of tactile discovery through playing in clay! This is an exciting class that stimulates the imagination and the senses. Tales and Treasures in a Book
Come paint a look in a book! Young students will create paintings, soft sculpture and puppets based upon wonderful stories and books. This class will give young children a gentle, sophisticated introduction to illustration and story interpretation through the art making process.
Students will be introduced to: paints, colored pencils, and markers and pastels. The end of the session will culminate in a beautifully illustrated book filled with bright paintings and illustrations of one or two favorite stories or folk tales.

Comic Book Illustration 2
The art of comics is a highly stylized approach to illustration! Develop drawing skills while learning the techniques of the pros. Illustrate your comics or cartoons featuring superheroes, manga style, fantasy or whatever you like. Starting with pencil, students will design their pages and transfer them to special blue-line board. Then, discover the secrets of comic book inking that give drawings added dimension.
Finally, students will photocopy their pages and add color with special watercolor dyes, creating their very own comic books. This course is ideal for students who have participated in Drawing Drawing Drawing, Drawing & Painting or past Comic Book classes.

Photography and Pin-Hole Cameras
Digital photography isn't the only way to take pictures. Learn how to use a "traditional" film camera and explore the use of photography as a means of self-expression. Students will do some darkroom work developing skills on how to create a photo print out of negatives they provide. Two classes will be spent making pinhole cameras and developing those pictures.
Students are responsible for a 35mm camera, film and the cost of developing. SLR cameras can be of the inexpensive variety; single use cameras are not recommended.

Teen Portfolio Prep

Printing Without a Press
The art of printmaking is utilized in numerous ways including, fine art, clothing design, stationary design, and more! You don't need expensive equipment to practice this art. Join Jane Chesson to discover the secrets of printing with tools and materials you can find in your own home. Finally, learn to put your creativity to use in the exciting world of printmaking without the use of a costly press!
Beginning - Intermediate students will learn a variety of printmaking skills and techniques using their own artistic aesthetic to bring to life relief, subtractive, fabric printing and more. This class will teach students to work directly and indirectly in styles of oil painting. This class is for the student who wishes to explore all aspects of the portrait. No matter what paint media you work in; oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal or any other 2D media, you are encouraged to join artist, Robert Bender in this class. The class will include opportunities to work from still-life over multiple weeks as well as opportunities to work En Plein Air on Perkins grounds.
Mr. Bender tailors instruction based on students' needs and will offer instruction on refining things like drawing, perspective, composition or color while also making the act of painting an enjoyable experience. Painting demonstrations will also be provided if desired. Students are asked to bring the materials they regularly work with.

Figure Sculpture
This course is open to the beginning and experienced student interested in discovering the techniques of clay modeling. Using terra cotta clay, students will work from a live model. During the first half students will be sculpting the head. This semester a new approach will be taken in the second half. Instead of sculpting the entire figure we will focus on tackling some challenging areas of the human body.
By popular request students will learn to sculpt hands and feet. Understanding these complex structures in 3D will be helpful not only in sculpting the figure, but also in drawing and painting. Demonstrations on proportion, anatomy, measuring and basic construction will be presented. Pieces will be bisque-fired and methods of patina will be addressed. There will be additional fees for clay.

Color Theory
Color Theory classes are ideal for both beginning and advanced painting students looking to advance their use of color in their art. This class focuses on an in depth look at color. Emphasis will be placed on answering color problems from the basic to the advanced using the methodology of the color experts including, Josef Albers. Thorough lessons in color mixing, value, hue and intensity will carry over to your artwork in various and beneficial ways.

In this workshop we will exchange our poems and provide rigorous but sensitive feedback on each other's work. We will also read contemporary poetry to inform our poetic standards. This course will provide students with individual instruction to accommodate varying levels of ability. Drawing Studio
Drawing skills are essential in order to excel in any other 2-dimensional art media. This class, open to all levels, is designed to instruct the student in the fundamental techniques of drawing. Individual attention will be given to each student so that he or she may develop at his or her own pace. Students will investigate the idea of drawing as a foundation of painting as well as its importance in the making of all art.

Learn about the fascinating process of turning mud into beautiful ceramic sculptures and functional objects! The lab fee included for all pottery classes covers the cost of 25lbs of Clay, Firing, Glaze and Pottery Open Studios on Sundays 1:00pm - 4:00pm and Thursdays 1:00pm - 4:00pm. There will be no class on November 26, 27, and 28.

Wheel Throwing, Hand Building & Surface Decoration

Handbuilt & Thrown Pottery
In this class, emphasis will be placed on exposing the student to a variety of throwing and altering techniques for making unique pottery forms as well as surface decoration and glazing techniques. Painting with Water-Based Med
If you're interested in painting with acrylics, watercolor, ink wash, or any other water-based medium, this class is for you. Colorfield Abstractions
Broaden your painting horizons through this in-depth focus on colorfield painting. Explore the painting techniques and color-layering processes behind this sophisticated genre, as well as compositional matters such as busy vs. calm space, balance, metaphor, and movement. Masters of the genre including Jules Olitski, Morris Louis, Nicolas de Stael, Sam Frances, Richard Diebenkorn and others will be discussed. Instruction will be supplemented by a slide presentation and both individual and group critique. Painting experience recommended.

From Photo to Fiber
It's time to unearth your travel photos, magazines, and doodles. In this course we will translate a photographic image or sketchbook drawing into fiber media, using various techniques such as Xerox transfer, appliquŽ, and embroidery. Starting with basic embroidery stitches, students will then be guided through the design process to think about composition, line, color, and texture, and will complete their own embroidered fiber art. They will come away with skills in transfer and needlework that can be adapted for other multimedia art-making. A materials list will be provided, students should also come prepared with scissors, a sketchbook, and pencil.

Color Theory
Explore the fascinating world of the science and art of Color in this course that is suitable for students of any skill level. Students will develop a personal color resource sketchbook through experiments in acrylic paint, paper collage, and colored pencil to cover the following topics: the 3 dimensions of color, light vs. pigment, color harmonies, the importance of contrast, the interaction of color, illusions of space and transparency, and the cultural and psychological impact of color. A materials list will be provided.

Registration Information
Registrations received before the first date of registration are processed at the end of first registration business day.
Early registration is strongly recommended to ensure placement in class of choice.
Members must be in good standing at start date to receive discount on classes and workshops.
Teens ages 16 and older may register for adult classes with teacher recommendation.
There is no prorating of any class.
No notification of registration acceptance will be sent. Receipt of payment by Perkins Center confirms registration unless notified of class cancellation or filled class.
Perkins Center for the Arts reserves the right to make changes in programs and teachers.
Perkins Center is not responsible for supervision of children more than five minutes before or after class.
Refund Policy
Refund requests must be submitted in writing to Perkins Center by stated deadlines. Phone calls will not be accepted as withdrawal notification.
Refunds and credits of tuition and supply fees will be issued as follows:
- 7 or more days before 1st class: 90% refund
- Within 6 days of 1st class: 90% credit
- After 1st class but before 2nd class: 75% credit
- No refunds or credits thereafter.
If a class is canceled, a full refund of tuition and supply fee will be issued within 30 days.
Memberships and non-member registration fees are not refundable.
Holidays and Snow Closings
Perkins Center is closed on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday, and December 25 - 26 (Christmas holidays). Students observing religious holidays will receive class credit upon request. Snow closing #2027, KYW News Radio 1060 AM.

Perkins Center for the Arts is now an educational resource for NJ State Certified Teachers!
The New Jersey Department of Education has approved Perkins Center as a Registered New Jersey Professional Development Provider for State certified teachers. Teachers can earn professional development hours by participating in any course, music lesson or workshop offered by the Center. As a provider, Perkins Center is included in a provider directory on the Department of Education's website,
www.state.nj.us/education.
In order to qualify for professional development hours, teachers need to request a Professional Development Documentation form from Perkins at the time of registration. A completed form will be provided to teachers at the end of the course.
In-service Programs
Perkins Center for the Arts also serves teachers and schools by facilitating Teacher-In-Service programs for area schools. Most recently, Perkins Center for the Arts has provided In-Service programs for the Medford Township Public School District music teachers and for the Mount Laurel Public School District visual art teachers. The in-service program is designed based on the needs of the school planning the service.
